Eurpoa Report Official Trailer

First Impressive Poster for Found Footage Sci-Fi 'Europa Report'

Fear. Sacrifice. Contact. This is awesome. Our favorite sci-fi blog io9 has debuted an impressive poster for Europa Report, the indie sci-fi about a mission to Jupiter's moon, Europa, where they're searching for life in the oceans. The film is apparently going to be presented entirely found footage, as was teased in the first trailer and footage late last year. The poster plays on that with some grainy visual static like the photo was decoded from video. The image itself is just a gorgeous shot of single astronaut walking towards the gigantic frozen ocean ice formation, with Jupiter (and their ship) looming above. It's simple, but a powerful image, and I love how much it conveys in just one beautiful image without the need for floating heads or huge text.

"For decades, scientists have theorized the existence of liquid water oceans on Jupiter's moon, Europa. We've recently discovered new, captivating evidence that these sub-surface oceans do exist and could support life. We've sent six astronauts from space programs throughout the world on a three year journey to Europa to explore its oceans and confirm these findings." The international cast includes Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Anamaria Marinca, Christian Camargo, Daniel Wu and Karolina Wydra. Europa Report is directed by Sebastián Cordero, from a screenplay written by Philip Gelatt. Magnet Releasing has the film scheduled for release VOD June 27th and in theaters August 2nd this summer. Teaser trailerThoughts?

LA Film Fest 2013 Drops Full Card Including Europa Report starring Christian Camargo

LA's big downtown fest has already announced their June festival opener as Pedro Almodovar's I'm So Excited and today brought the bulk of their lineup into the light of day. Most notable is the inclusion of Nicholas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives which heads to LA Live hot on the heels of its Cannes premiere. Some of you may remember that Refn's last Gosling starrer Drive followed a similar course.

Also on the docket is the festival closer and Sundance hit
The Way, Way Back directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. That film brings the red carpet appeal of stars Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, and Sam Rockwell, along with a great performance by young Liam James. Fellow Sundance stand-outFruitvale Station will also make its LA premiere at the fest.

Other notable films from deeper into the catalog include acclaimed Joshua Oppenheimer docu
The Act of Killing, Johnnie To's Drug War, and my personal Sundance/SXSW fave, James Ponsoldt'sThe Spectacular Now. David Lowery's Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck starring oater Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Lucy Walker's touching head-injury doc The Crash Reel, and the SXSW winningShort Term 12 by Destin Daniel Cretton will also play the fest.

Like every year, LAFF will also feature a rich and diverse lineup in its documentary and dramatic competitions. Those names may look unfamiliar now, but be ready to find some becoming well known in the near future. The midnight
Beyond section is also back and features Brian Netto'sDelivery, the US premiere of Miike's Lessons of the Evil, and another chance to see Adam Wingard ridiculously enjoyable You're Next.

Coming to a film festival soon?

As we await word on Thursday for the Cannes Film Festival selections, there is a film that may make the cut. It still has no title, but Christian Camargo has directed a modern day version of “The Seagull” starring Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Jean Reno. Both Mark Rylance and his daughter Juliet are in it–she’s married to Camargo, whose mother, Victoria Wyndham, played Rachel Cory on “Another World” for most of its 35 years on NBC. Got that? (And Juliet was born when Mark Rylance was only 19, got that? Talk about a soap opera!) Christian Camargo, who’s 42, is justontheverge of being a big deal, is considered an accomplished theater actor and up and coming director. If this untitled film is ready for Cannes, it will be quite a feather in his cap. If it’s not ready yet, look for it to emerge in Venice or Toronto. Either way, this will be a big deal for Katie Holmes, who’s looking to re-start the film career she more or less abandoned to marry Tom Cruise.

Apocalyptic films loom large, but heroes and hilarity may rescue us

A summer movie preview

Ah, summer: time to lie back, pour yourself a tall lemonade, and watch the world go to hell in a handbasket. If there is a theme to the studio blockbusters coming out between Memorial Day and Labor Day, it is that Apocalypse is nigh, is here, or has already happened.
Consider: In “After Earth,” arriving in June, Will and Jaden Smith play futuristic father-and-son adventurers stranded on Earth 1,000 years after it was abandoned by the human race. In the same month’s “World War Z,” a heroic UN employee (Brad Pitt) is the only person who can stop a global zombie pandemic. July sees “Pacific Rim” from “Pan’s Labyrinth” director Guillermo del Toro, in which monsters from beneath the sea assault humanity and we respond by building ginormous robots (think “Transformers” meets “Godzilla” with a sense of style).
August brings a baldheaded, cyborgified Matt Damon in “Elysium,” directed by South Africa’s Neil Blomkamp (“District 9”). Set in the year 2154, it’s the ultimate 99-percenter’s nightmare, with the ultra-rich living on a cushy space station and the rest of us sweating it out on a ruined Earth. Demons erupt from an alternate dimension in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” and zombies invade London in the antic “Cockneys vs. Zombies.”
Cartoons and comedies stare into the void, too. A mythical forest is the setting for a face-down between the forces of good and evil in the animated “EPIC.” “This is the End” casts Seth Rogen, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, and Rihanna as themselves at a Hollywood party as the planet goes kerplooey, and “The World’s End,” the latest from the “Sean of the Dead” gang, envisions a pub crawl on the eve of apocalypse. Even “Man of Steel,” the much awaited Superman relaunch, climaxes with bad alien dude Michael Shannon bent on destroying Earth.
What the heck is going on here? The summer movie lineup does include the usual share of sequels — “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Kick-Ass 2,” “The Hangover: Part III,” “The Fast and the Furious 6” (!) — and there are a number of major releases that aren’t specifically pegged to disaster, although fans of “The Great Gatsby” and “The Lone Ranger” may disagree once they see what Baz Luhrmann and Gore Verbinski, respectively, have done to those properties. And there are a few small, witty mammals running between the feet of the dinosaurs: A new Woody Allen (“Blue Jasmine”), a new Sofia Coppola (“The Bling Ring”), a second collaboration between “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling (“Only God Forgives”).
There’s even “Before Midnight,” the third film in the beloved series begun by 1995’s “Before Sunrise.” That’s cause for cheer in a summer slate that desperately needs some. Is it that our global calamities have finally seeped into our escapist entertainments? Or is this just natural Hollywood escalation? If summer movies are all about blowing things up louder and better than last year, it stands to reason we’d eventually have to bloweverything up. In any event, sit back, relax, and enjoy Armageddon.
Note: Like summer weather, opening dates are subject to change.
